Economic Model Predictive Control for optimal struvite recovery

Resource recovery from municipal wastewater has been a prime focus for decade. Although several processes already exist in the market today, high cost of material, inherent disturbance influent quality, lack real time monitoring critical parameters, and robust automation system may result suboptimal performance. This work attempts to construct model based predictive control optimal operation struvite unit full scale WRRF. A multi-parameter developed by implementing an Economic Model Predictive Controller (EMPC) dosing magnesium hydroxide unit. The EMPC used customized objective function real-time optimization performance economical parameters crystallization effectiveness proposed controller is verified through tests conducted on Benchmark Simulation No. 2 (BSM2d.). results obtained simulator-based evaluation demonstrate significant improvement resource at reduced operational costs. economic advantages compared proportional constant dosage also enumerated.
